Basia Bulat

Heart of My Own

3.5/5

Written during a visit to the Yukon, Bulat’s sophomore release is more self-assured and less fragile than 2007’s Oh My Darling. “Gold Rush” starts out with slow, cutting violin before erupting into a quick-paced, upbeat rhythm. Bulat’s vocals guide you through the powerful fiddle, crashing drums, back up vocals and accordion. The title track is heartbreaking, and has a slow, strong kick drumbeat, over which Bulat’s vocals deepen and carry over the low twangy guitar and fiddle. It is on songs like this in which Bulat’s vocals sound stronger, more forceful and certain. “If Only You” is a catchy track with soft piano and folksy guitar; Bulat’s lyrics espouse contradictory frustration and devotion. Lyrically, Heart of My Own is romantic, honest and looking to the future, and musically less structured than those of Oh My Darling. An impressive second album for the twenty-six year-old Bulat.
