Four Tet
There Is Love in You
4.5/5
Since hitting shelves last week, There Is Love in You, the long awaited release of Four Tet (aka Kieran Hebden) has shown that it might be a possible contender for one of 2010’s top releases. Only a handful of effects make up the framework of this dreamlike album, as Hebden has stripped it down to its bare, organic essentials: a steady rhythm, soothing aquatic chimes, and the serene hum of a siren spliced throughout each track. Yet, each of these elements play a pivotal role in diversifying the album, as they often (and unpredictably) fade in and out to create an overall thematic masterpiece.
“Love Cry”, the disc’s first single, maintains an ambient dub-step thump. “This Unfolds” conversely indicates the album’s complexity – as Hebden subtly layers a number of effects ranging from melodic pin drops, to hypnotic synth. It’s the minimal hinting of these sounds that keep you wondering if they’re only part of your imagination. Your best bet would therefore be to lounge back, and take in this album in its entirety.
