One of MSU President Mary Koziol’s pet projects has come to life.
The weekly campus farm stand celebrated its grand opening last Thursday. Fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as honey and other preserves, were available for sale in two tents in front of the oval garden outside University Hall.
The food was provided by three local farms: Simpler Thyme Organic Farm of Flamborough, Liz’s Busy Farm Shop of Campbellville, and Two Century Farms of Grimsby. The farmers sold their products to the MSU, which set up shop and sold it to students and McMaster employees in a non-for-profit practice.

I have a fetish for how schools are built. The other week, I got to indulge it when I went on a tour of the new MBA school, the Ron Joyce Centre (RJC) in Burlington.
Come September the RJC will be a part of McMaster University’s DeGroote School of Business. The Ron Joyce Centre was under construction when I saw it, but amid the concrete walls and bombastry of it all, the building was already impressive.

Elizabeth May wants you to have faith in government. Just, however, not the current government.
The federal leader of the Green Party was in town on July 5 to speak at a political fundraiser. While her speech to party supporters dealt largely with the Greens’ role and hopes within Canadian politics, she took the opportunity of a pre-event interview to discuss the environment and youth activism.
Sitting in the wings of Hamilton’s Workers’ Arts and Heritage Centre minutes before addressing the crowd, May was emphatic that in order to affect change on the environment, or any other cause they care about, young people will have to start visiting the polls in greater numbers.

The G20 weekend. It was a chance for protesters to rally together to show their opinions on the current standing of the world. I was down by King street on Saturday, where many protest groups choose to gather together. It was there that the headlines would be made. This would be the event that people would remember with every future reference to the G20/G8 protests in Canada. The image: a large group of protesters chanting, a squad car ablaze, and a wall of police who had pushed the crowd back, clearing the area to allow firefighters to calm the flames.

In a move established partly fiscal reform and partly fiscal prudence in troubling economic times, the university’s Board of Governors has approved a tuition fee increase of approximately four to eight per cent, to vary by faculty and year.
Four separate proposals were presented to the Board of Governors’ meeting on May 6, each dealing with aspects of the school’s fee and tuition structure for the coming year. The first proposal dealt with basic tuition fees, which are scheduled to increase by the maximum allowable amount as set by the province for both next year.
Humanities students will see their fees remain the lowest of all the faculties, despite a four per cent increase that pushes their tuition up to $6,060 in Level One and decreasing slightly for each following level until settling at just below $6, 000 for Levels Four and Five students.

It has been nearly four months since Mary Koziol was elected President of the McMaster Students’ Union. It has been four weeks since she took office. The Silhouette sat down with her recently to discuss her progress, plans, and objectives for the upcoming year and how they’ve evolved now that she has gotten a taste for the job. The following are selections from that interview.
