Look around campus at the tops of the crowd. Chances are you’ll see
one of four colours; blond, brown, black and the occasional ginger.
Hair colour, while one of the more trivial subjects I’ve looked at,
has been bugging me for some time now. Look around again at the people
walking past, specifically the blondes this time.

How many are natural
blondes? For an easy tell look at the colour of the eyebrows. This
will lead you to the observation that natural blonds are few and far
between on campus. In fact, the blond gene has been said to be
decreasing for some time now. The actual study proving this was proved
to be a hoax though, as it was based on the recessive nature of the
blonde allele. Yet looking around campus it looks to be true.

If so much dye is used to make all these synthetic blondes then it begs
the question, why blonde? Is it years of stereotyping and media
representation that has caused such a boom? Or is it just that other
less natural colours – a phrase that seems redundant, as the blondes in
question aren’t natural – scare people away?

I remember a girl living in the Edwards residence last year who had fluorescent pink hair. It looked
stunning. It was something that drew the eye better then any peroxide
or platinum and it looked marvelous.

Synthetic colours that are normally only seen in cartoons should become more
popular. Bring out the blues and the greens. Bring out the vibrant reds and the
deep purples. If you’re going to dye your hair anyway, then dye it
something new. There are more than half a dozen colours to choose
from. Open up paint or Photoshop and play with the colour palette
until you find something you like.

Then when you go to get your hair
dyed, tell the stylist to go for the rainbow shades instead of turning your hair into one of
the many fake natural colours.
