Olivia Brouwer, who has been blind in one eye since childhood, is communicating her experience of vision loss alongside feelings of incompletion and limitation through an ‘unfinished’ series of oil paintings. The paintings are inspired by the Rorschach Inkblot test and explore the concept of sight and perception.

Thursday, November 9th, 5-6pm: Meet #Hamont artist Paul Elia at the #AGHShop Meet & Greet as part of our Art Rental & Sales monthly artist feature series. Meet Paul, learn about his process and purchase or rent an original piece! Paul Elia is a graduate of The Ontario College of Art and Design, where he began integrating Drawing and Painting with Digital Media. He has since exhibited work in various notable galleries all over Southern Ontario. Paul has worked closely with Toronto filmmaker Judith Doyle. Together they formed Reading Pictures, an innovative multi-media organization providing consultation and production services. Paul also worked on art direction and design with the modern abstract painter Ben Woolfitt. In 2007 Paul moved back to his hometown of Hamilton and began creating his large format cityscapes. The work has grabbed the hearts and imaginations of the Hamilton community. It’s success has followed alongside the cultural renaissance happening in the city. In addition to showing in many galleries and museums in Hamilton and Toronto, the works can be seen all over the city, from the trendy Earth to Table Bread Bar, to the innovative ping pong lounge Serve, to the cool boutique shop at the centre of the James North Art Crawl, Mixed Media. After studying Drawings, Paintings and Integrated Media at the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) and working with filmmakers and artists in Toronto, Paul Elia returned to his hometown of Hamilton and started his Hamilton Strip series. His art is inspired by the city’s landscape and remnants of the manufacturing industry.

The work of 19^th century impressionists Gustave Caillebotte, Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro are currently housed at the MMA alongside Vincent van Gogh’s bold oil painting and the imaginative landscapes of J. M. W Turner. The paintings signify historical and modern art donated by Dr. Herman H. Levy in 1984.

The exhibit curated by Sally Frater aims to unmask deeply imbedded “rape culture” in society.

The work of Lesley Loksi Chan, Insoon Ha, Roya Akbari and many more will be featured in the Centre[3] galleries. The exhibit is named after the infamous excuse by Brock Turner’s father who said that his son, who was convicted of multiple sexual assault charges, shouldn’t go to prison for “20 minutes of action”.

Vancouver-based artist Deborah Koenker captures the stories of 96 temporary Mexican agricultural workers of British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley. The exhibit is a tribute to the sacrifices, struggles and resilience of the workers who have made a significant but overlooked contribution to the Canadian economy.
