Pop culture enthusiasts rejoice! Canada's biggest comics, sci-fi, horror, anime and gaming event is back in the heart of the 6ix.

From August 28 to 31, the Metro Toronto Convention Centre was taken over by capes, cosplay, collectibles and community for FanExpo Canada 2024, Canada’s largest celebration of all things fandom. Drawing over 130,000 attendees annually, the convention brought together fans of anime, sci-fi, comics, gaming and horror for a four-day spectacle of creativity and connection.

For McMaster students, FanExpo is more than a fandom event—it’s a cultural hub just over an hour away. And with GO Transit offering seamless service, it’s easier than ever to get there.

Here’s how: Students can hop on a GO Bus from campus to Aldershot GO Station, then transfer to a Lakeshore West GO Train, arriving at Union Station in downtown Toronto. From there, it’s a short underground walk through the PATH system to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre—no taxis, Ubers, or TTC transfers required. With a Presto card, the round trip is both cost-effective and efficient, making FanExpo a perfect weekend day trip.

So why should McMaster students make the trip?

FanExpo Toronto is more than celebrity sightings (though there were plenty—this year’s guests included Gaten Matarazzo of Stranger Things, Katee Sackhoff from The Mandalorian and anime voice actor Christopher Sabat). It’s a one-of-a-kind space where fans can meet creators, attend live panels, participate in hands-on workshops and explore hundreds of booths in the vendor marketplace.

Beyond entertainment, FanExpo is also a place of professional opportunity. For students studying media, visual art, communications, or theatre, the event offers access to industry panels, portfolio reviews and networking moments with working professionals. Many young creators have used FanExpo as a launchpad for showcasing their art, cosplay, or content—and the exposure can be invaluable.

The Artist Alley alone is worth the trip, featuring local and international illustrators, zine makers, and designers selling original work you won’t find in stores. For those wanting to support small creators or decorate their dorms with unique art, it’s a goldmine.

Importantly, FanExpo continues to grow more inclusive and accessible. The 2024 edition introduced new quiet spaces, clearer signage and expanded accessibility accommodations—ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all fans.

Whether you’re looking to snap a photo with your favourite TV character, attend a panel on storytelling in video games, or simply people-watch some of the most impressive cosplay in the country, FanExpo delivers. For McMaster students navigating a stressful back-to-school season, it’s a refreshing reminder of the joy and creativity that fandoms can bring.

Pack your Presto card, grab your favourite T-shirt and take a short ride into a world where imagination comes to life.
