The Marauders sweep the competition against Western University as they embark on a new year with new players

After the departure of notable players, including Sam Cooper and Mateusz Wlodarski as well as head coach Dave Preston, the McMaster University men's volleyball team knew they would need to rebuild. Led by new head coach Brad Douwes, the Marauders looked towards newer players to fill in these gaps for the season.

The transition of both players and coaching staff seemed to have come with a few bumps based on their current record. The team's record includes three losses for their Ontario University Athletics games, whereas last year the group completed the season with only two losses in total.

Despite this, the Marauders have shown excellent growth and form, all while incorporated their newer and younger players into high stakes games. This was best highlighted during their most recent games against Western University.

On Jan. 12 and 13, the team took on the Western Mustangs for the first time this season. Both games took place at the Burridge Gymnasium, with the Marauders having home court advantage.

In their meet on Jan 12, the Mustangs won a tight contest, finishing the game with a score of 3-2 sets. Even in the loss, the Marauders showcased their younger depth, with first-year Brady Paterson and second-year Jack Mackley helping the Marauders pick up points.

In their next match-up on Jan. 13, the Marauders returned back to their excellent form, picking up a win with a score of 3-1. Their depth continued to shine with Paterson and fellow first-year Jared Kuiken helping tremendously in the win.

The Marauders still have a long way to go, with eight OUA games until the end of the regular season. They will likely continue relying on their first years with the hopes that these experiences will reward them when the provincial playoffs approach.
