Updated: Campus internet, e-mail restored after service outage

A severed cable kilometres from campus resulted in an internet service outage at McMaster from late evening on Nov. 25 to the next evening. During that time, many students expressed frustration in not having access to Avenue2Learn, .mcmaster.ca webpages and McMaster e-mail. As a result of the outage, the provost announced that some assignment deadlines have been moved. Assignments due Tues. Nov. 26 are due on Thurs. Nov. 28. Assignments due on Nov. 27 and 28 are due on Nov. 29. However, the test ban originally in place from Nov. 28 to Dec. 5 will be lifted to allow testing to continue.

Updates from the university's Daily News site were posted below throughout the day, as dailynews.mcmaster.ca was not accessible during the outage for many users.

7:30 pm: The internet line cut by a crew working several kilometres from campus has been repaired and internet and email service has been restored.

2:20 pm: Tests will continue as scheduled. Test ban will be waived so testing can continue as deemed appropriate by instructors/associate deans.

1:45 pm: 

Assignments due Tues. Nov. 26 are due on Thurs. Nov. 28.
Assignments due on Nov. 27 and 28 are due on Nov. 29.

McMaster continues to experience disruptions in internet and email service. The main line was cut by a crew working several kms from campus. Although [McMaster has] been in constant contact with the internet company it is uncertain when the connection will be restored.

10:50 am: Due to the internet/email outage, deadlines for student assignments will be extended 24 hours.

10:30 am: The external service provider continues to work to repair the severed line, located off campus, causing today's internet service disruption.

Campus users are having difficulties accessing external sites, some Mac sites and email.

Those in Mac locations other than the Westdale campus are unable to access Mac email or the web.
